Symbol Cross-reference tables
When you create schematic symbols for download, there are actually four files that are created for you to download and use. The Viewlogic/Mentor symbols are placed in a Zip archive and the Orcad symbols are available in EDIF format. Additionally, a cross-reference file is created that can be viewed on-line in table format, and as a commma-separated-value, CSV, version that can be downloaded into your spreadsheet program.
These cross reference tables serve multiple functions. They provide a means to locate a pin on a set of symbols, they provide a quick check for missing or duplicate pins, and finally the CSV file can be used to create symbols to your specific standards.
The tables have six columns:
- CNT -- this provides a quick count and verification that all the pins on the package have been accounted for in the symbol set.
- SYMBOL -- the name of the symbol on which the pin is assigned.
- SLOT -- the location of the pin on the symbol. L=left,R=right,T=top,B=bottom. Slot numbers increase from top to bottom, left to right. Slot numbers may not be duplicated, they can be skipped.
- PIN -- the actual pin number which will appear on the symbol and in the netlist
- TYPE -- pin type for Orcad symbols.
- TEXT -- the label that appears next to the pin. Duplicate labels are interpreted as pass-throughs by ViewLogic, duplicate labels will generate warnings in Orcad.
Oleda also provides a utility function to generate symbols from files which conform to our CSV format. These symbols support both Viewlogic and Orcad, and they are not limited to FPGAs. You can now create schematic symbols with just a text file input and save time on all your components.
